From 1998 to 2012, I wrote 69 articles for bimonthly Chamber Music magazine, 61 of them composer profiles under the rubric "American Composer." I would like to point out that, when I took over the column, there had been 70 such profiles by other writers; three of them were about women composers. Of the 61 columns I wrote, 26 were about women composers. Also, previous columns had nearly all been about august figures of the older generation; I concentrated on my own generation, and also highlighted several composers from the generation after mine. I should also note that, due to the nature of the magazine, one criterion was that the composer had written a repertoire of chamber works for acoustic instruments; some of my favorite composers were rendered ineligible on that basis.
