Kyle Gann: Adagio 1972

PDF score

With some misgiving I put up an orchestra piece I wrote at the age of sixteen. I would not want it performed, nor is there any fear of that happening, but perhaps it documents my intellectual precocity. The dominant influence is Carl Ruggles, and I can also hear moments of William Schuman, Roger Sessions, Roy Harris, and Wallingford Riegger, all of whom I was listening to at the time. Its value is autobiographical, not musical. Its effect - along with a choral piece based on Carl Sandburg's The People, Yes - was to gain me admittance to Oberlin. The recording is a MIDI realization.
