To the Fount Be the Glory was a piece of furniture music I wrote for my doctoral recital at Northwestern University in 1981. My idea was to have it played during intermission by a brass quartet in the lobby arrayed somewhat like a Salvation Army band. The piece is entirely based on rearranged measures from the hymn "To God Be the Glory." Time got away from me and I gave the concert without implementing the idea, but in 2016 a student working with a similar hymn-tune reconstruction reminded me of it, and it was a simple matter to complete the sketch I had so long ago started. I think now it could be as easily played by wind quartet or string quartet.
