for two pianists, two percussionists
In August of 2024, pianist Benny Gambino emailed me from Italy and asked if I had anything for
two pianists and two percussionists, like the Bartok Sonata. I said I didn't but I could
write something. He had a group that could play it. So I programmed myself to not think about
Bartok for three months. With all the mallet percussion I imagined a musical road trip,
and for landscape I thought about the Vermilion Cliffs outside Las Vegas, which seem to
go on forever, and forever changing color as you drive through them, one of the most beautiful
sights I've ever seen. One begins a trip with certain expectations, but things change along the
way, and one changes - and by the end of the trip one is not who one thought he was.
