Kyle Gann: As the Day Is Long (1982)

As the Day Is Long was made during my brief fling with improvisation in the early 1980s. There is a background tape, consisting of an expanding simple chord sequence with some polytempo and gradual-acceleration features. Over this, the flute and synthesizer (please forgive the rather brash, early-1980s timbre of the latter) play written-out melodic lines in any order they wish; they begin, and the tape part slowly fades in behind them. The drum set part is totally improvisatory, played here by my friend Jim Gley. The piece was performed in Chicago on a concert of the Chicago Inter-Arts Ministry in May, 1982.
