Kyle Gann: Hudson Spiral (2010)
Hudson Spiral is a four-part canon at the major sixth. The harmonic spiral technique it uses, drawn from a book on canons by the early Chicago theorist Bernhard Ziehn, is one I've also used in Chicago Spiral, Concord Spiral, and the last movement of Cyclic Aphorisms. Hudson Spiral was originally to be the finale of a three-movement string quartet, but the first movement of that work grew too long to accomodate other movements, so it was sent into the world on its own.
